Saitek was a brand every flight-sim gamer held in high regard. But if you can overlook these shortcomings, the Warthog really is one of the best HOTAS setups you can buy. It's just a shame about the high price since some owners have complained about quality issues with some of the internal components, and there's no twist (or z-axis rotation) support.
The stick has 19 action buttons and a hat, and everything requires the same amount of pressure as in the plane it's modeled after. For features, you're looking at Thrustmaster's HEART system with a 16-bit resolution for impressive precision. It's one fine-looking HOTAS with plenty of metal resulting in a weighted build - this joystick alone weighs in at more than 6 pounds. Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS is as good as it looks, designed after controls in an actual air force aircraft. Looking a the device, it positively screams premium and looks the part in any gaming cockpit. The Warthog is the company's flagship offering, designed and built using the controls inside the U.S. None of the above is needed of course – you can mouse-and-keyboard it, plug in a gamepad, or dust off a joystick of your own – but these sticks sure do look pretty, and with the modularity and configurable nature of the devices, we look forward to getting our hands on one.Thrustmaster makes some high-quality ticks and HOTAS setups. And given the stagnation of new devices from the other parties and Saitek’s willingness to experiment and work with CIG to develop devices to its specifications, it became an ideal partnership.
The developer didn’t just want to slap a logo on a device already on the market and call it a “Star Citizen HOTAS” – it wanted to create a flexible approach to match the flexible nature of those who fly. As to why CIG went with Saitek over CH or Thrustmaster – two brands that in the minds of many exemplify quality stick manufacture – it became clear that it was a matter of vision. It isn’t clear when the physical units will be ready, or indeed what the final price point will be. After that CIG showed the high-end version, a metallic build re-interpretation of Saitek’s X65 system, again modular, but this time with a large OLED screen, giving you direct image feedback of key ship systems.
